Monolith
An exploration of ergonomic form, user interaction, and organic surface design.
Concept
This project explores ergonomic design through an organic monolith that supports two distinct hand positions while encouraging interaction through comfort and curiosity.
DEvelopment
The process starting with molding clay and ending with maple wood while ensuring the object feels natural and comfortable in the hand. To create a beautiful grain pattern the pieces are laid out in alternate order.
Manufacturing & Construction
The monolith was assembled by dividing the layered wooden sections into three main segments, making the gluing process more accurate and manageable. After each section was aligned and bonded together, the three assemblies were joined to recreate the complete form.
Finish & Surface Refinement
The monolith was hand sanded from 80 grit to 3000 grit, requiring many hours to achieve a flawless, smooth surface. A final coat of Danish oil enhanced the natural wood grain and gave the piece a rich, polished finish.
